We have identified that miRNAs upregulated in the terminally differentiated cells in the human colon epithelium cooperatively suppress BMI1, a key regulator of self-renewal in stem cells. Our findings reinforce the concept that identification of terminal differentiation pathways can guide the discovery of stem-suppressor and tumor -suppressor pathways. This research is performed in collaboration with the researchers in Stanford, Columbia, UCSD, Kyoto and Kobe Universities, and published in Journal of Gastroenterology.
