History: Department of Biochemistry
Our lab was established by Professor Isao Ishiguro in 1974 as the first department of biochemistry at the Fujita Health University. Under the leadership of Professor Ishigro, pioneering researches on tryptophan metabolism were performed. Professor Nobuhiro Harada succeeded the lab in 1998. Main themes of Professor Harada who pioneered the research on aromatase, a critical enzyme for estrogen synthesis, were 1. in vivo roles of estrogen, and 2. hormonal therapy for breast cancers. In 2018, Professor Yohei Shimono succeded the lab. By applying the reserch experiences on stem cells and cancer, Professor Shimono started new projects to find the ways to overcome cancers by analyzing cancer stem cells in human cancers.
