Fujita Health University will be the first host as a Japanese university for the "THE Asia Universities Summit" held in 2021 of the Times Higher Education (THE), which is the provider of the most prestigious university ranking in the world. The summit has been held every year as an international event where the top universities in the world have attended since 2016, and this fifth event in Japan following Hong Kong, Korea, China and the UAE will be the first time in the country.
We are planning to have speakers such as a Nobel prize winner, international leaders and top universities' presidents from all over the world, and we aim to hold the summit which leads the international networking of the universities by reaffirming the advancedness of Japanese universities as a knowledge base to the world.
The theme of the Asia Universities Summit 2021 is Crossing boundaries, unlocking creativity. In addition to the challenges facing Asian countries, such as the sharp decline in student numbers, rapidly growing aging society and the expansion of internationally mobile students, the summit will work creatively and innovatively on the global challenges of universities such as AI and SDGs.
Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer at THE, said: “Over the last five years the THE World Summit Series has developed into the preeminent forum for leaders of the world’s most prestigious and most ambitious universities to gather together with senior colleagues from government and industry to explore how to further enhance the extraordinary contribution universities make, through their teaching, research and civic engagement, to make the world a better place. Japanese university leaders have played a central role as speakers and delegates across the series, at meetings across all continents. So, we are absolutely delighted to be hosting our first ever summit in Japan, in a city at the very heart of the nation, Nagoya. We thank Fujita Health University for providing the leadership and vision to make this inaugural Japanese summit happen.”
